Chapter Seventeen

Lincoln

I tip my head to one side. “How does the offer of cake sound?”

Cake always helps. Another one of my mother’s philosophies on life and, as I have pitched her as the most perfect woman that ever lived, I will surely take her advice whenever and wherever I can.

Anna’s eyes light up. Cake does that to women. And I miss cake. It was one thing that stopped being in my life. At the same time as my mom.

“Yes, I’ve not eaten anything today, so yes, cake sounds fantastic.”

Reeni is quick to hurry her out of the door on the promise she will hold the fort and lock up at closing time.

The great thing about the bakery is it’s a restaurant licensed to serve alcohol too. So, a glass of champagne to accompany some small perfectly baked cakes is sure to be a winner and soften the atmosphere.

We need time alone, to get to know each other a little better, and for me to change Anna’s fast-growing perception of me as an immature artist with little grasp on reality.

I open the door for her and let her lead the way to my car, we then drive the couple of miles to the high street where the cake shop is located.

She peers in through the windows at the display of macaroons and icing-covered fancies. Clutching her stomach she follows me through the door.

We choose a range of small cakes at the counter and then find a small table near to the window. The sweet smell of sugar, and pale pastel décor lightening both of our moods.

“Thank you.”

“What for?”

“For taking me away from the seriousness of today.”

I smile. “Hey sometimes life is serious, but we all need a little escapism.” I fidget with the sugar pourer, twisting it around and listening to it crunch against some spilled granules on the table. “My problem is coming back to reality from my usual life of escape.” I cast a cheeky grin her way.

“Hmm.” She ponders my remark. “How do you do it?”

I lean back in my chair. “It’s the way I am, I suppose. I see no point to being miserable or letting stuff annoy me. I can’t remember the last time something frustrated me.”

She shakes her head.

“I know it sounds ridiculous. But I keep away from drama. Never listen to the news or gossip. And don’t take aggression seriously. I see no point to it, or certainly no benefit.”

“I get frustrated all the time.”

“What with?” I cock my chin up to her.

“Money or lack of. Time or lack of. Energy or lack of. Yeah pretty much everything missing in my life.” She tries to laugh off her woes.

The waitress interrupts us, placing dainty porcelain plates and tiny cake forks in front of us. Then she returns seconds later with a three-tiered cake stand full of the cakes we ordered, and two glasses of Champagne.

A warm feeling radiates from my chests when I register the excitement in Anna’s eyes.

“What about what you do have?
